Tennis: US Open 2025 women's final preview - Aryna Sabalenka faces Amanda Anisimova - how to watch live

Aryna Sabalenka and Amanda Anisimova are the last two women standing in the quest to be crowned champion at the 2025 US Open (24 August-7 September).

The world number one and Wimbledon finalist, respectively, face off in the women’s singles final on Saturday (6 September), competing for their first — and the last — Grand Slam title of the 2025 tennis season.

Sabalenka is the defending champion at Flushing Meadows, as she aims to become the first woman to retain the US Open since Serena Williams in 2014. The 27-year-old has been atop the WTA rankings for 45 weeks and is closing in on securing the year-end no.1 accolade for the second year running.

A first-time finalist in New York City, Anisimova continues the trend of an American woman in every major final this season. Just 56 days after her heartbreaking Wimbledon final, the world number nine has another shot at becoming a major champion, barely 70 miles (114km) from her hometown of New Jersey.

Here is everything you need to know about the US Open women’s singles final.

2025 US Open final – Aryna Sabalenka seeks season’s elusive major

Though Sabalenka has had a fantastic season, where she has won three titles including two WTA 1000 trophies, she has so far fallen short of adding to her collection of three Grand Slams.

In fact, she has lost two major finals in 2025 to American women: Madison Keys was triumphant at the Australian Open, while Coco Gauff fought back to win the French Open. The only time she did not reach a final? She lost to an American: Anisimova.

“I badly wanted to give myself another opportunity, another final, and I want to prove to myself that I learned those tough lessons and I can do better in the finals,” said Sabalenka in her press conference after beating Jessica Pegula. “If I'll be able to hold that trophy, it's going to mean a lot for me. I'll be the happiest person on earth, probably.”

Sabalenka has overcome the likes of 2021 US Open finalist Leylah Fernandez and 2023 Wimbledon champion Markéta Vondroušová on her way to the championship match, while also extending her superb record of 18 consecutive tiebreak triumphs.

The world no. 1 is into her third straight US Open final, a testament to the consistency that has allowed her to stay on top of the world rankings for so long. The goal is undoubtedly to wrap it up with a title defence, on the hard courts she so cherishes and a tournament she adores.

2025 US Open final – Amanda Anisimova one step from ultimate redemption

Anisimova has proven resilience since she took a mental health break in 2023, putting herself first and coming back even stronger. It has since been a year of firsts for the 24-year-old: a maiden WTA 1000 title in February, a first Grand Slam final in July and now a debut US Open championship match.

The eighth seed, who will rise to world number four after the tournament, has produced two statement performances at Flushing Meadows. Her quarter-final triumph against Iga Świątek quelled the Wimbledon trauma, while semi-final success over Naomi Osaka was a masterclass in the psychological game.

“It means the world,’’ Anisimova said in her on-court interview upon reaching the final. “I’m trying to process that right now. It’s just absolutely a dream come true. It has been a dream of mine like forever to be in the US Open final, and obviously the hope is to be the champion. But I’m in the final now and I’ll try to get ready.’’

This tournament is already an accolade in its own right for Anisimova, whose previous best result at the US Open was the third round. She will also fancy herself against Sabalenka, holding a superior head-to-head record, including a win in their most recent match at Wimbledon.

The 24-year-old is the first American woman since Sofia Kenin in 2020 to reach two major singles finals in the same year. That year, Kenin won one final and lost the other, something Anisimova will look to replicate at Arthur Ashe Stadium.
