Alejandro Garnacho proves Manchester United right amid transfer decision

Manchester United's transfer window is in full swing and there has already been tons of news and speculation surrounding the club's activity.

Whether it is incomings or outgoings, United are never far from the headlines and today has been no different.

Alejandro Garnacho's social media activity has sparked controversy again, while United's scouting team has been massively streamlined ahead of their confirmed return date to pre-season.

With that in mind, here is a look at the major Manchester United headlines on Monday, June 23.

Garnacho and Rashford show why United are getting rid of them

Rashford and Alejandro Garnacho have become content-creation collaborators in the Manchester United departures' lounge. United still pay their wages but they brazenly undermined their employers with a choreographed stunt on Sunday.

If you did not see Garnacho's Instagram post, he donned an Aston Villa shirt bearing 'Rashford 9', as if Rashford is some cult figure at Villa Park. Rashford tallied four goals in 17 games as Villa slid down the Premier League table, bottled it at Old Trafford to miss out on Champions League qualification and were walloped by Crystal Palace in the FA Cup semi-final.

Rashford was injured for that humbling at Wembley but was present at the boxing at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium later that evening. We are long past the point where Rashford cared about the optics of his social life. He attended a birthday party on Deansgate hours after he was cheered off in a 3-0 Manchester derby defeat at Old Trafford.

Any notion that Garnacho's post was not choreographed beggars belief. You can tell when he is uploading onto his Instagram page (his passive-aggressive pre-Europa League final story and return from the post-season tour).

The other giveaway is Rashford's use of the word "brother" in the comments. It is the most hollow and meaningless noun in football. Rashford and Garnacho have only ever socialised during team-bonding dinners.

United make drastic scouting decision

Manchester United have streamlined their scouting system to ten first-team scouts.

‌

Christopher Vivell, the director of recruitment, has been empowered to oversee United's recruitment network since he arrived at the club last year.

Vivell joined United last year, initially on a temporary basis, and helped oversee recruitment in the club's first summer since Sir Jim Ratcliffe became a minority shareholder in February 2024.

United's scouting network was once so bloated it was in excess of 100 scouts but dozens have left the club across the two rounds of redundancies over the past 12 months.

Pre-season return date set

Manchester United’s players will report to Carrington following their summer break in the week commencing July 7.

United’s first pre-season game comes in the shape of a clash with Leeds United in Stockholm on July 19. Just days after their trip to Sweden they will jet off to the United States where they will participate in the Premier League Summer Series, facing West Ham, Bournemouth and Everton.

They will then return to England before a friendly against Fiorentina at Old Trafford on Saturday, August 9.
