Star India batter Sarfaraz Khan has said that all Mumbai cricketers should play the Kanga League and while some players think that if they fail in the tournament, it would affect their future, the likes of Sunil Gavaskar and batting legend Sachin Tendulkar wouldn’t have reached great heights if they thought the same.

Since his Test debut for India last year, Sarfaraz has scored 371 runs in six games at an average of 37.1, with one hundred to his name. The Ajit Agarkar-led BCCI selection committee opted against including him in the 15-member team for the Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy.

The Kanga League is held during Mumbai’s monsoon season, scheduled between July and October. Overcast skies and moisture-laden tracks make run-scoring a challenge for batters. Representing the Parkophone Cricketers, Sarfaraz played a fine innings of 61 from 42 deliveries against the Islam Gymkhana.

Mumbai cricket greats like Gavaskar, Tendulkar, Sandeep Patil and Dilip Vengsarkar, among others, used to play the Kanga League whenever their schedules permitted.

“During my childhood, I heard a lot of stories from my father [coach Naushad Khan] about how Gavaskar sir once turned up for a Kanga League match despite returning from England the same morning," Sarfaraz said while speaking to Mid-Day.

“So, Musheer [younger brother] and I have always taken pride in playing this tournament. While returning from Nagpur last evening [Saturday], we were hoping it wouldn’t rain today," Sarfaraz added.

“All Mumbai players should play [Kanga League]. Some players feel that if they fail here, it’ll be bad for their future. But if Gavaskar sir and Sachin Tendulkar sir thought the same way, they might not have gone on to become legends," Sarfaraz said.

It has been almost a year since the star batter last represented India. After scoring 150 against New Zealand in Bengaluru last October, Sarfaraz played just two more Tests before he was dropped from the Playing XI.
