Premier League clubs spent in excess of £2billion across the two transfer windows of the 2024-25 season, with a surprise side revealed as the biggest overall spender. In recent years, the wealth of the English top flight has grown at a faster rate than leagues across the world, giving Premier League clubs considerable might in the transfer market.Lavish spending is no longer just the preserve of 'Big 6' clubs, instead the likes of Aston Villa, Newcastle and West Ham are very capable of pulling off several big signings a season. There is no better example of this point than the top spending club of the 2024-25 campaign: Brighton. The Seagulls have spent £231.4m, according to figures from football finance expert Kieran Maguire, on 25 arrivals across the two windows.Brighton backed new boss Fabian Hurzeler in the summer and brought in a host of fresh faces including Georginio Rutter, Yankuba Minteh and Matt O'Reilly. Their winter window was comparatively quieter but that didn't stop them signing young Greek striker Stefanos Tzimas for £20m.Manchester United added full back Patrick Dorgu to their ranks in the January transfer windowOmar Marmoush was one of five additions to the Manchester City roster at the expense of over £180m during the winter windowBrighton topped the spending table among Premier League clubs during the 2024-25 seasonWith a total of £202.1m, Manchester United have been the second biggest spenders in the Premier League this season, while rivals City come in third with £200.8mThe two sides have reached their eye-watering totals in reverse, with United very active in the summer window, bringing in the likes of Joshua Zirkzee, Manuel Ugarte and Matthijs de Ligt, as they sought to empower Erik ten Hag and improve on the side's record low performance. That tactic proved to be unsuccessful as did Man City's, who saw Julian Alvarez, Joao Cancelo and Sergio Gomez depart without replacement.Pep Guardiola's side were forced to react last month and spent more than £180m on new arrivals including Omar Marmoush, Nico Gonzalez and Abdukodir Khusanov.Rounding out the top five are Chelsea and Aston Villa with spends of £196.7m and £136.6m respectively. The Blues were the most active club in the division overall, with 35 arrivals and 31 departures across the two windows. At the other end of the table are Premier League leaders Liverpool who have remarkably spent the least amount of money among top-flight clubs this term.Arne Slot has been afforded just two signings this season - Federico Chiesa and Giorgi Mamardashvili - but has put the Reds on the cusp of a historic season.Chelsea have been the most active club in the transfer market with a total of 66 transfers (Pictured: Pedro Neto)Liverpool have only made two signings since the appointment of Arne Slot in the summer (Pictured: Federico Chiesa)Ipswich have been the highest spending newly promoted side, while Southampton have also spent more than £100m on new additionsTransfer Spending 2024-25 (£) 1.
