MANILA – Filipino Tennnielle Madis and Australian Jizzelle Sibai downed Japanese pair Yuzuha Negishi and Riyo Yoshida, 6-4, 6-2, on Wednesday to reach the second round of the International Tennis Federation (ITF) J300 Kuching at the Sarawak Lawn Tennis Association court in Malaysia.

They will face No. 7 Chinese tandem Zhang-Qian Wei and Shiyu Ye, who drew a bye in the first round.

Meanwhile, Madis bowed to No. 9 Russian Anastasia Lizunova, 1-6, 6-7 (3), in the second round of the singles category.

Lizunova will be up against Aishi Das of New Zealand, who eliminated No. 6 Renee Alame of Australia, 7-5, 2-6, 6-3.

Top seed Reina Goto, No. 2 Kanon Sawashiro and Yui Komada of Japan also moved to the next round.

Goto whipped Kimiko Cooper of Australia, 6-2, 6-2; Sawashiro outplayed Albina Kakenova of Kazakhstan, 6-3, 7-6 (4); and Komada stunned No. 8 Ada Kumru of Turkey, 3-6, 6-4, 6-4.

Other winners No. 4 Kamonwan Yodpetch of Thailand over Shiyu Ye of China, 6-1, 6-4; No. 5 Polina Kuharenko of Belarus over qualifier Nelli Ivanova of Russia, 6-0, 4-6, 6-3; and No. 7 Yuyao Li of China over qualifier Riho Goto of Japan, 6-2, 6-4.

Madis and Russian partner Alexandra Malova lost to Australian siblings Renee and Rianna Alame, 1-6, 2-6, in the final round of the J200 event in Kuala Lumpur last Sunday.

"She fought well in the singles despite the sweltering weather here. She has not fully recovered from the cramps in the first round," PTA head coach Robert Angelo said in an online interview Thursday. "Lizunova played very well, it was a good match."

"Hopefully, Tenny plays better in the doubles and get points in Thailand next week," added the former Davis Cupper and SEA Games medalist.

The Nonthaburi Closed Regional Championships is set on April 28 to May 3.

Madis kicked off 2025 with two doubles titles in United Arab Emirates in January. Last year, she bagged five doubles titles, including four with PTA teammate Stefi Marithe Aludo in J60 events held in Manila, China, Thailand, and Sri Lanka. (PNA)
