Serbia v England Tips: King Kane on target in our 28/1 Bet Builder for Tuesday's battle

0
England head to Serbia on Tuesday evening to play what is their most difficult fixture in World Cup Qualifiers for the 2026 tournament.

With four wins from four games, even a defeat in Belgrade won’t matter too much to the Three Lions, but England could do with a good performance.

‘They won – but have turgid England regressed under Tuchel?’ was the BBC’s headline after a stodgy 2-0 win over Andorra on Saturday. The issue with that question is, it assumes they were playing well before the former Chelsea manager took charge.

Regardless of that, this match will need more grit than gloss from Tuchel’s charges. Here’s Andrew Beasley’s five selections for the game that you can combine into a Bet Builder.

Serbia or Draw: Double Chance

If England have truly regressed, they’re in trouble. These sides met at Euro 2024, with Gareth Southgate’s side earning a narrow 1-0 win thanks to an early header from Jude Bellingham.

While the Serbs didn’t create any big chances, they outshot England six to five in that match. They also have a strong home record, avoiding defeat in their last seven matches on their own turf, with clean sheets in the previous five.

This run includes last years Nations League campaign, in which they beat Switzerland 2-0 and collected 0-0 home draws with Spain and Denmark. Proper teams, not Andorra and the like.

England haven’t won too many away games when they’ve had to go east of Italy either. In the last four years they’ve had 1-1 draws against Poland, Ukraine and North Macedonia. They lost 2-1 in Czechia in 2019 too.

It’s always possible England will blow a team away with the talent in the team. With little evidence of that lately though, take Serbia And Draw in the Double Chance market.

Both teams to score: Yes

Serbia’s defensive record suggests they may find their way to a positive result by holding the English attack at bay.

But as much as the Three Lions have struggled for wins in this part of the world, it’s rare for them not to score in a match. The last 14 games outside tournaments in which they drew a blank were evenly split between home and away too.

In the same period, they have just two clean sheets on the road against nations that were in the top 35 of the FIFA rankings at the time. With Serbia sat 32nd at present, say ‘yes’ when it comes to Both Teams to Score.

Harry Kane to score

Harry Kane will get the goal assuming England find the net, right?

Not necessarily. If we exclude games against the minnow nations, the Bayern Munich man has only netted in three of this last seven international starts on the road.

In the last such match, against Finland, England’s scorers were Jack Grealish, Trent Alexander-Arnold and Declan Rice. The former and the latter got the goals in the previous example, a 2-0 win in Ireland (sorry, Paddy).

But let’s frame the question the other way. If you don’t pick Kane for your goal scorer bet, who on earth are you going to select? Exactly.

Even if we ignore his credentials as the Three Lions’ record scorer, he’s the only player to have started all five games of the Tuchel era. Kane is guaranteed to be in the XI so back him to be an Anytime Goalscorer.

Eberechi Eze 1+ shots on target

While we can’t be certain Eberechi Eze will start, he’s featured in the last four games, starting the previous two. Only three players have appeared in more matches for Tuchel.

He carries a goal threat too. Eze had five shots on target across his last four caps, at a rate of one every 45 minutes. He also had at least one effort between the sticks in 19 league games last season, a decent return given he started 31.

Pick Eze to have at least one shot on target.

Under 8.5 corners

The previous meeting of Serbia and England saw barely any corners. Just three in fact.

While there will probably be more than that here, there’s unlikely to be loads. Ignoring the fact England had 12 corners in Andorra in June, their previous seven away matches saw a maximum of nine and an average of just 5.9.

Let’s go for Under 8.5 corners to give ourselves a little wiggle room if this is above average for the Three Lions on the road.
