Two teams stuck with players who are evidently not wanted are considering some sort of swap arrangement. But we definitely shouldn’t call it a swap, and we most definitely shouldn’t call it a trade. As per The Telegraph, Chelsea and Manchester United are “weighing up the possibility of trying to send Christopher Nkunku and Alejandro Garnacho in opposite directions this summer”. Both players want out, both teams want them out, therefore “the prospect of them trading places has not been ruled out, although there is no expectation of a swap deal being negotiated.” So it’s not going to be a “swap deal” but instead it’ll be the latest installment of the “trading places” movie franchise. Move over, Eddie Murphy and Dan Aykroyd!Semantics aside, this might actually be a decent solution for all involved, with Nkunku failing to live up to expectations at Chelsea and Garnacho failing to make friends with head coach Ruben Amorim at United. That said, even in this age of PSR, pseudo-swaps in football are rare and complicated. The presence of ex-Chelsea director Christopher Vivell “could play a key role”, though I’m not sure he left us on the best of terms.
