Liverpool Women were heavily beaten by Everton Women, losing 4-1 at Anfield in manager Gareth Taylor’s first match in charge.Liverpool Women 1-4 Everton WomenWSL (1), AnfieldSeptember 7, 2025Goals: Kapocs 12′; Vignola 24′ 54′ 56′, Snoeijs 45+4′On a miserable afternoon at Anfield regarding both the weather and result, Liverpool were heavily beaten by their Merseyside neighbours, but you wouldn’t have expected it judging by the first half of football. While the Reds did go in at half time 2-1 down, they had dominated proceedings and took the lead early on as Gareth Taylor chose to sit in the stands to watch, something he occasionally did at Man City also.Earlier in the week, winger Cornelia Kapocs told This Is Anfield that she wanted to contribute more “in the way of goals and assists,” having scored just twice in the WSL last season. She certainly made a good start on her target, brilliantly opening her account just 12 minutes in, after picking the ball up on the left, dribbling into the area and smashing the ball in off the underside of the crossbar in front of the Kop.That would be the high point of the Reds’ day, though, as they then missed chances and were made to pay on the counter-attack.Twelve minutes after Kapoc’s strike, Everton‘s forward debutant, Ornella Vignola, scored the first of her hat-trick by running onto the ball, carrying it into the penalty box and shifting the ball onto her left foot to curl brilliantly past Faye Kirby in Liverpool’s goal. That shot wasn’t saveable, but the same couldn’t be said for Everton‘s second, which was headed in by Katja Snoeijs for her third consecutive derby day goal.Liverpool could have done with their new goalkeeper signing, Rafaela Borggrafe, who may have been able to better keep out the header that proved too strong for Kirby’s wrist.Despite being fit, Borggrafe didn’t play, with manager Taylor telling BBC Radio 5 Live that she was unavailable due to an “internal club issue” and is currently in Germany.Vignola scored twice in quick succession to complete her hat-trick in the second half, and with Taylor having now come down to the dugout, the last 30 minutes became little more than a training match in the pouring rain. This week, the new coach called for patience and to take positives from the Reds’ performances where appropriate. They were certainly excellent in attack for the first 45 minutes, but their defensive woes cost them against Everton, who are now unbeaten in eight WSL Merseyside derbies.Liverpool Women: Kirby; Fisk, Bonner, Evans, Woodham (Shimizu 81′); Nagano (Maclean 64′), Kerr, Hobinger (Roman Haug 81′); Holland, Enderby, Kapocs (Olsson 64′)Subs not used: Morgan, Parry, Kiernan, Clark, Silcock
