Canadian Open suffers another withdrawal as former Grand Slam finalist becomes the latest to drop out

With the tennis season approaching the fourth and final Grand Slam of the year, the Canadian Open is the first of two ATP Masters 1000 events set to take place before the US Open.

The tournament, however, has already seen several big names announce that they won’t be featuring in Toronto.

World number one Jannik Sinner withdrew, followed by Novak Djokovic, Jack Draper, and Carlos Alcaraz, among others.

With the two-week event placed so soon in the schedule after Wimbledon, players are continuing to pull out, and now a former Grand Slam finalist has added himself to the list.

Former US Open finalist has withdrawn from the Canadian Open

2014 US Open runner-up Kei Nishikori has withdrawn from the Canadian Open and will be replaced by Mackenzie McDonald.

Nishikori’s last match was at the Geneva Open in May, where he was forced to retire due to injury mid-contest with Karen Khachanov.

The Japanese star did not feature at the French Open, where he was scheduled to play Alcaraz in the first round.

He did not play a match during the grass swing and was preparing to make his return during the North American hard-court season.

Kei Nishikori’s past results at the Canadian Open

Having appeared at the tournament nine times, Nishikori has enjoyed some deep runs in Canada over the years, the first of which came in 2015, when he made it to the semi-finals before bowing out to Andy Murray.

The following year, the former world number four went a step further and advanced all the way to the final, where he ultimately lost to Djokovic.

His next best campaign was his most recent one, in 2024, where he reached the quarter-finals, but was defeated by Matteo Arnaldi.

Nishikori has never won an ATP Masters 1000 title, despite reaching four finals at the level.
