Paul Scholes says Man Utd should have gone all out to sign 'best in the world' Man City star, 'biggest mistake'

Manchester United legend Paul Scholes has raised his concerns with Manchester United’s goalkeeping situation.

On transfer deadline day, Manchester United were pleased to complete the signing of promising goalkeeper Senne Lammens.

Football director Jason Wilcox lauded Lammens after the deal was completed, but head coach Ruben Amorim chose not to start him against Manchester City.

The decision has left Paul Scholes worried, as he believes it is a judgment on Lammens, adding to reservations he already had.

And after watching Gianluigi Donnarumma in the City goal, Scholes is full of regret that United did not sign the Italian instead.

Scholes’ concerns about Manchester United situation

Manchester United played Altay Bayindir in goal against City, who has been promoted to first choice, but has been the back-up to Andre Onana for two years.

Onana was demoted and subsequently loaned out to Trabzonspor before the Turkish transfer deadline.

Speaking to The Good, The Bad & The Football, Scholes expressed his concerns about Lammens, remarking that it was ‘incredible’ Amorim did not start him.

He said: “What’s the price? 20 million euros. It tells me he’s not a top goalkeeper. And if he is a top goalkeeper, he’s playing, he’s straight into the big game.

“Because we know United have got big, big problems in goal.”

Scholes added his view that recruitment continues to be a problem at United, arguing that Andre Onana should have been moved on earlier in the transfer window.

“Did it really take him to that Grimsby game to realize that Onana’s not good enough?

Onana had a disastrous game for Manchester United against Grimsby, making mistakes for two goals in the club’s embarrassing Carabao Cup exit.

Scholes upset United did not sign Donnarumma

Scholes believes Manchester United’s biggest error was not signing Manchester City goalkeeper Gianluigi Donnarumma when he became available from Paris Saint-Germain.

He said United officials should have ‘drove to Paris’ to conclude a deal as quickly as possible.

“The Donnarumma one is the biggest mistake that I can see. As soon as that man became available, drive to Paris, go and get him, give him whatever whatever he wants.

“He could be easily the best goalkeeper in the world… he reminds me of Peter Schmeichel.”
