On the occasion of National Sports Day, India pays tribute to Major Dhyan Chand, widely regarded as one of the greatest hockey players of all time. Born on 29 August 1905, in Allahabad (now Prayagraj), Dhyan Chand earned the nickname ‘Hockey Wizard’ for his unmatched skill, which has inspired generations of hockey players.Dhyan Chand led India's field hockey team to global dominance, securing three consecutive gold medals at the 1928 Amsterdam Olympics, 1932 Los Angeles Olympics and 1936 Berlin Olympics.Also Read | Assam sports min reviews preparations for international cricket events in GuwahatiThe legendary hockey player scored more than 1,000 goals in his sporting career between 1926 and 1948. He was honoured with the country's prestigious civilian honour, Padma Bhushan, in 1956.Dhyan Chand began his journey in the British Indian Army, joining the First Brahmin Regiment in Delhi as an ordinary soldier in 1922.
