'That would never happen'

The opening weekend of the new Premiership season has concluded with Celtic, Hibernian and Hearts the only sides picking up wins.

From Celtic’s perspective, even though the performance wasn’t great against St Mirren, normal service resumed for Brendan Rodgers, and many inside Parkhead are hoping it will result in a 56th Premiership crown.

Of course, Rangers will want to have something to say about that, but that has been the story of Scottish football for decades and decades.

But is there now a new competitor in town? Hearts’ new investor, Tony Bloom, has been pretty vocal about what he plans to do in Scottish football, and he wants to upset the apple cart in Glasgow.

Barry Ferguson shuts down Tony Bloom’s hopes for Hearts involving Celtic and Rangers

Barry Ferguson has seen it all as a player and recently as a manager in Scotland’s top tier.

Speaking on Go Radio, whilst Ferguson appreciates Bloom’s comments, including how it’s ‘fine being ambitious’, he shut down the suggestion from the Brighton owner that he will split Celtic and Rangers.

The former midfielder stated splitting the top two in Scotland would ‘never happen’, and the comments were echoed by Charlie Mulgrew.

On Hearts splitting Celtic and Rangers, as well as winning the league: “It’s fine being ambitious, but there is no way it’s happening,” said Ferguson. “That would never happen.

“I think Hearts have a really good manager in place. Derek McInnes knows the league inside and out. Hearts have got good players. It’s between Hibs and Hearts for third place; that’s where they will finish.”

Charlie Mulgrew then added: “Definitely not this season.”

Years since Premiership clubs won the Scottish title

The last team to win the Premiership title outside of Celtic and Rangers was Aberdeen, when Sir Alex Ferguson triumphed at the top of Scottish football in 1985.

But since then, Celtic and Rangers have had numerous dominant periods, and in truth, nobody has come close outside of Glasgow to winning the league.

Even when Rangers were demoted down the divisions, Celtic would win the league with absolute ease, time and time again.
