Billie Jean King Cup 2025: Ankita Raina to lead Indian tennis squad for Asia-Oceania Group I ties

Asian Games bronze medallist Ankita Raina will lead a five-member Indian tennis team at the Billie Jean King Cup 2025 Asia-Oceania Group I ties to be played at the Deccan Gymkhana in Pune from April 7.

Ankita Raina is the top-ranked Indian women’s singles tennis player at world No. 292.

The five-member Indian tennis team also includes Sahaja Yamalapalli (rank 301), Shrivalli Bhamidipaty (rank 313), Vaidehi Chaudhari (rank 405) and Prarthana Thombare, the top-ranked Indian tennis player in doubles at world No. 136.

Following a meeting of the Professional Selection Committee on March 1, 2025, the All India Tennis Association (AITA) selected the Indian team based on rankings, recent performances and player availability.

Teen sensation Maaya Rajeshwaran Revathi has been named as the reserve player.

Rutuja Bhosale, who won the Asian Games 2023 mixed doubles title with Rohan Bopanna, was not named in the squad. However, Bhosale and Vaishnavi Adkar will join India’s training camp set to commence on April 2.

Vishal Uppal has been named as captain of the squad while Radhika Kanitkar will serve as the coach.

Along with India, teams from Chinese Taipei, Hong Kong China, the Republic of Korea, New Zealand and Thailand will feature in the Billie Jean King Cup 2025 Asia-Oceania Group I.

The Billie Jean King Cup, formerly known as the Fed Cup, is one of the most prestigious international tennis events for women. It brings together top-ranked players from different countries to compete in a team format. The tournament is the women’s equivalent of the Davis Cup.

The top two teams from the Asia-Oceania Group I will qualify for the play-offs while the bottom two will be relegated to the Asia-Oceania Group II for next year.

India finished third in the Billie Jean King Cup 2024 Asia-Oceania Group I, played in the People’s Republic of China last year.
